Rhythms of Indian Cinema
From the very first silent movie of yesteryears to the glamorous blockbusters of today, Bollywood has indeed come a long way. And along the way have changed the various dance styles that have captivated us through the years. A collage of foot-tapping numbers from Indian movies, cutting across multiple dance styles and eras, and reinterpreted by our talented choreographers in creative ways will forward the theme of this glamour filled night.
Through "Taal - Rhythms of Indian Cinema," Zingaris is delighted to present the rich tradition of Bollywood though a myriad of dances including bharatnatyam, fusion, Afro-Brazilian, salsa, hip hop, jazz and folk, in addition to the ever popular "filmy" dances.
Come, join us for an exciting evening and let Zingaris recreate onstage the magic that is Bollywood.
O Solemiya
Choreographed by Lisbeth Salinas, Tejash Unadkat
Infusion of latin beats has become more prevalent in Bollywood today. From Hrithik Roshan to Kareena Kapoor, stars have sashayed to the rhythm of salsa. Our bollywood latin fusion dance (hindi, jive, salsa, & flamenco) encompasses this latest trend by following the very crux of Indian cinema - men wooing women. We follow the men, who in the carnival atmosphere of "Gori Gori" attempt to find their dream gal. After the initial introduction they invite each other into the more intimate dance of 'O Solemiya'. Eyes flutter, heart beats faster and bodies move gracefully in close unison to the prevailing rhythm. As women are not easily captured, a chase ensues. The dance segways into the sexy up tempo "La Agarro Bajando", where the men continue the hot pursuit of their loves. They dazzle each other with intricate tricks, flashy moves, ultimately forging a connection that lasts a lifetime.

Woh Ajnabi
Choreographed by Pooja Sadarangani
The dance flows to the shy emotion of a girl's secret crush on a stranger who has mysteriously touched her. In one fleeting encounter, a myriad of new emotions begin to grow inside her, desires which are inexplicable even to herself. Confused and longing for him, she finds herself thoughtlessly seeking after him, simultaneously hoping and fearing to capture his attention once more. As we journey through this girl's innocent pursuit for "Woh Ajnabi," perhaps her story will stir in all of us the fond memory of our first crush.

Bharatanatyam Fusion
Choreographed by Gopitha Tharmalingam
Spiced with passion, this piece goes back to the beginning … the beginning of it all….before the first human heartbeat. There are many theories to ‘the beginning’ - the mythology of gods and nymphs dancing in the heavens and even the big bang theory with mother natures elements. Whatever these theories may be, we are human after all, with all our forces and faults, desires and disappointments. This piece takes you on a journey from ‘the beginning’ to all that makes us human.
Cinematic Infusion (Naach)
Choreographed by Anusha Sinha
Naach (Dance)!! This is the rawest form of expression. Dance and drama – intrinsically intertwined, both telling a story through movement and presenting an escape into the vignettes that intrigue and charm us away from reality... Indian cinema uniquely infuses its drama with dance, seamlessly blending the truest forms from the East with the most modern elements of the West. This contemporary dance reflects the integration of Hollywood and Bollywood through contrasting, yet related vignettes, shadowed by dramatic undertones. Anchored by entrancement and intrigue, the music quickly transitions to mainstream Hollywood rhythms and peak Bollywood music....consider this “an infusion of cinematic escape”...
Dancers: Seema Shah, Julie Chin, Kalyan Kattamuri, Raj Kanna, Swapnil Amin, Vijay Rengaswamy, Arosha Peiris, Anusha Sinha

This piece explores the dynamics of his struggle from overcoming his fear to succumbing himself to the overwhelming desire, to realize in the end that it was all a "DREAM."
